Needs more rust holes.

It is missing the subsequent weeks and months where you leave the disassembled thing on your work surface looking at it thinking “I’ll get back to that right after I finish X” and the parts slowly disappear until you finally admit that even if you had all the parts still, you were never going to fix it and then quietly and unceremoniously scoop it all into the trash can and die a little inside.

Missing part where other equipment in house is damaged because of this repair attempt.
Washing machine
Oil soaked clothes to mask oil stains
Rusted bolt causes all tools to be broken on it

In Vermont, the final stage for the unfixed item is “Device slowly retreats into the lawn”

Could also use a line where you buy more tools, justified by the thought that “if this does it, it’s still cheaper than paying labor...”

I need to get this one for my dad. I think I’m permanently in that $150 per hour range with him. :)

What? What, what’s happening there?

The god damn washing machine and oil soaked clothes really got me. David is a treasure to be cherished.

But no one one gives away Nobel Prizes in maintenance. Not even the Norwegians, and they give prizes to almost anyone.

So many tools in my garage were purchased for this very reason.
Compression Tester
Vacuum pump
Vacuum gauge
Bend and flare kit
TWO Fuel pressure test kits
Oscilloscope (ok not really but it fits)
Hole saw kit
Pickle fork kit
etc

For me, the pickle fork and flare tools are both in my tool set for the same reason. Add to that a recent purchase of a filter wrench like this:
which IMMEDIATELY paid off by loosening a famously stubborn fuel filter, and water filter, in my boat.

In Vermont, it is legal(ish) to leave junk in your yard until it subsides into the soil. Recycling! We are still pulling carpets and burnt-down couches out of our yard and pastures.
